Meeting Tips & Talking Points

Review practical tips and suggested talking points to help you prepare for congressional meetings, navigate conversations effectively, and clearly communicate your key priorities.

Stay on Message

Stick to the key points. Avoid tangents or controversial side issues. Focus on how your ask benefits their constituents or aligns with their priorities.

Make it Personal

Share real stories about how the issue affects you, your members, or the community. Humanizing policy helps leave a lasting impression.

Coordinate with Your Group

If you are participating in a group for your congressional meetings, try to assign speaking roles: Who will introduce the group, who will share a personal story, and who will make the legislative ask. Practice staying within your allotted time (usually 15–20 minutes).

Post Meeting Debrief

At least (1) participant from each meeting is expected to complete a Debrief Form.This will help NARHC better understand what was discussed and how we can work with these offices moving forward.
